BHRT & Men’s Health
In honor of Men’s Health Month, we’re going to focus on Hormone Replacement Therapy for men. Most people hear “hormone therapy” and assume it’s only for women, but testosterone replacement has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes in older men. Low levels of testosterone are associated with abnormal cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, and type2 diabetes.
Testosterone is one of the most well-known androgens, or metabolic steroids that are precursors to impactful hormones. Andropause is a deficiency of androgens, and can cause several difficulties, including decreased body hair, reduced muscle strength, increased body fast, reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, depression, and mood swings.
In addition to testosterone, other hormones such as adrenals, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and progesterone also play important roles in men’s health and fitness. Adrenals control several areas including sleep, blood sugar, and stress response. DHEA is converted to testosterone and progesterone, and a deficiency can result on widespread issues. Progesterone works with estrogen in our bodies. When the ratio is skewed and there is less progesterone and more estrogen, men may experience decreased libido, weight gain, and gynecomastia.
